Visa requirements for Myanmar citizens are the applicable rules and conditions that are effective upon crossing the border with any selected foreign country.

Myanmar nationals wishing to travel internationally must obtain a regular Embassy visa, a Visa on Arrival, an electronic visa, or travel with a valid passport (under visa exemption, if possible).

The pre-established requirements determine which type of travel permit Myanmar citizens will have to obtain prior to their visit. Unfortunately, citizens of Myanmar do not have much international travel liberty since most countries do require them to present a valid Embassy visa upon arrival.

Currently, nearly 50 destinations have come forward with either a Visa on Arrival option or a complete visa exemption for Myanmar citizens to enjoy. Moreover, about 30 countries offer an electronic visa option as well.

Despite all these facilitations, Myanmar citizens have to obtain an Embassy visa when visiting over 130 countries.

All four visa systems allow Myanmar citizens to engage in all leisure, work, or transit-related travels. However, the allowed activities may differ and usually depend on the selected visa type within a particular system you'd be using.

Generally, eVisas, Visas on Arrival, and visa-free travel allow you to take on short-term trips related to leisure, work, or transit. This means that you can go on vacation, visit your family and friends, explore the selected destination and learn more about its culture and customs.

Moreover, you should also be able to go on a business trip to discuss new work-related opportunities, close a new deal, or negotiate a contract. Lastly, all three visa systems make it possible for travelers to have a layover while transiting.

The last of the visa systems we're going to discuss - Embassy visas. These are a bit more challenging to obtain and are usually connected with extensive requirements to meet. Here allowed usage can also be a little different since Embassy visas can also be issued for long-term trips, even those related to employment or studying in a foreign country.

Electronic visa

Starting off with the most traveler-friendly visa system - electronic visas. eVisa is an electronic alternative to a regular visa and comes in PDF form delivered to the applicant's email box or links directly to the traveler's passport.

All that is usually needed to apply for an eVisa is a valid passport that will not expire for the next 6 months, an active email address, and access to any online payment method. You can easily apply within a few minutes from home or any other place using your phone, laptop, PC, or tablet.

List of countries offering eVisas for Myanmar citizens

Over 30 destinations welcome Myanmar citizens holding valid eVisas. Make sure to submit an online eVisa application a few days prior to your visit to any of the above-listed destinations. The approved document will be delivered straight to your email inbox in the form of a PDF file. No visits to the Embassy are needed!

Please note! Electronic visas are issued for short-term stays only. The exact length of the permitted stay differs depending on the selected destination. However, it's usually 30, 60, 90, or 180 days with other less-common options also available. Each country decides on the matter and establishes an acceptable length of visit with an eVisa on hand.

As was already briefly mentioned, eVisa serves for all short-term visits related to tourism, business, or transit. It's perfectly suitable for going on a relaxing getaway, exploring new tourist destinations, backpacking, or making friends and family visits. Using eVisas, you can also go on a business trip or have a stopover while transiting to another destination.

Visa on Arrival

Myanmar citizens can also travel with Visas on Arrival. VoA is a travel permit obtainable after arriving in the selected country. Travelers have to ask for a Visa on Arrival application form at any border control checkpoint at the border, including land points.

Currently, 25 countries offer a Visa on Arrival for Mynamar citizens. Visiting any of the above-listed destinations is connected with applying for your visa after arrival. However, some of these countries also have an eVisa option for Myanmar citizens.

Check if the country you're visiting has an eVisa option to ease your traveling experience and handle the necessary visa in an effortless way. Getting an electronic visa in advance takes away from the stress of obtaining your visa at the very last minute and is much more secure. Travel prepared with eVisas whenever possible!

However, if you've selected a destination that does not offer an eVisa option along with their Visa on Arrival program, here's how to get an approved VoA:

  1. First, a few weeks before the planned visit, check if the VoA country you're visiting has any requirements for Myanmar travelers to meet upon arrival. The selected destination' authorities may need you to present some documents validating the purpose of your stay. Thus, it's essential to check what can be needed beforehand.
  2. Prepare the required documents (if any) along with your valid Myanmar passport. Moreover, it's essential that your travel document stays valid throughout the whole duration of the planned trip to avoid any issues upon arrival. Check if your passport has an appropriate validity period before going.
  3. Once you've arrived prepared, go to the nearest border control checkpoint and ask the customs officials for a Visa on Arrival application form to fill.
  4. Fill out the form and submit it along with all the required supporting documents (if any) and cover the fees if the authorities ask you to do so. Please note! It may be necessary to cover the fee for Visa on Arrival issuing in cash form and the local currency. Check if that applies to the destination you've selected and exchange your currency before arriving if it is.
  5. Wait for your application to be approved.

Embassy visa

The last visa type that citizens of Myanmar need to apply for upon visiting over a hundred different countries is an Embassy visa. Embassy visas are regular travel permits that usually come in the form of a stamp in the traveler's passport and are handled at an Embassy of the selected destination.

Myanmar passport holders still need a visa obtained at an Embassy upon visiting the above-listed countries. This type of visa cannot be obtained online and usually requires going through a much more complicated and lengthy process of applying.

Since you must apply for your visa at an Embassy before visiting these destinations, it's also crucial to check the current visa requirements there. Call or visit the selected destination and ask for the present visa requirements in place. This way, you can be sure that the documents you'll gather will make complete paperwork and, therefore, will most likely lead to receiving positive approval from the country's authorities.

So, collect the required documents and submit them along with a filled Embassy visa application questionnaire to the official institution in your country. Next, cover the fees (if necessary) and wait up to a few weeks for approval.

Please note! Sometimes travelers need to go through a special visa interview with a consular officer to be able to validate the purpose of their stay appropriately. Since the whole Embassy visa process is a bit more complicated, it's essential to start the preparations and the actual application process at least a few weeks before the planned trip. This way, you can be sure to get your visa on time.

Visa-free countries

Lastly, even though citizens of Myanmar don't have much travel liberty, there are still some countries that make it possible for them to travel without a visa. Visa exemption is currently offered by 13 countries.

Only 13 countries make it possible for Myanmar citizens to visit without having any type of visa. Remember, there's still a requirement of having a valid passport to enter any of the above-listed countries without any issues.

Since Myanmar is part of the ASEAN (Southeast Asian countries), it has visa-free access to all of them besides Malaysia.

Choose any of the above-listed destinations, grab your valid passport, and travel without having to obtain a visa! You can go on vacation to enjoy all leisure-related activities, visit your friends and family, go on a short-term business trip, or transit while reaching another destination.

Please note! Visa exemption does not always come with no requirements (besides the valid passport). Sometimes, the countries' authorities may need some documents to validate the purpose of your stay. These can come in the form of hotel bookings or proof of having sufficient funds for the trip. Thus, make sure to check if you need to prepare any documents before the planned trip.
