eVisa to Ethiopia: Basic Information

Ethiopia is one of the most welcoming countries in the world for tourists. In order to make travel easier, the government has replaced traditional Embassy tourist visas with electronic travel authorizations known as e-Visas. Travelers from every country in the world can now apply for Ethiopian tourist e-Visas online.

Applying for an eVisa allows you to avoid Embassy interviews, high costs, and long lines. Applications are approved by the government of Ethiopia within 3 business days, and sent straight to your email inbox for you to print out and present at the airport when you arrive.

An Ethiopian eVisa costs 99 euros or 129 euros, depending on the length of your stay.

  • Types of eVisa

eVisas for Ethiopia come in two different lengths:

    • 30 days
    • 90 days

Citizens of all nations are able to apply for either the 30-day or 90-day eVisa, depending on their desired length of travel.

    Every Ethiopia eVisa is:

    • A single entry visa (you can only enter Ethiopia once using your visa)
    • For tourism purposes only. This includes family visits

The validity period of your Ethiopia visa starts from the date of entry that you write on your application form.

  • List of eligible countries

The Ethiopia eVisa program is currently open to citizens of all nations. In other words, every country is eligible for an e-Visa for Ethiopia.

The only requirements that applicants must fulfill are:

    • The applicant's passport must be valid for at least 6 months past the date that they intend to enter Ethiopia
    • The applicant must provide a recent photo that meets normal passport photo parameters
  • eVisa Ethiopia application form

Apply for your Ethiopian visa swiftly and securely though our online visa application form. Your results will arrive within 3 business days, though most applications are approved in under 24 hours. Please note that your online application must be submitted at least three days before you travel to Ethiopia.

    Starting the process

To start the application process, find the application portal in the left-hand sidebar of this webpage and select your visa length option: 30 days or 90 days. Remember, no matter which stay-length you select, every Ethiopian e-Visa is a single-entry tourist visa. Then click "Apply Online" to be taken to the application form.

    The application form

The second step towards getting your Ethiopia tourist visa is filling out the visa application form. You'll be asked basic details like your passport information, intended dates of stay, and email address. Please follow the guidelines and instructions issued at each stage of the application.

    Uploading supporting documents

You'll also be asked to upload a few supporting documents to your application:

    • A scan or digital photo of the bio-data page of your passport
    • A recent, passport-style photograph in digital format

Remember, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past your date of entry to Ethiopia. If your passport does not have the necessary validity, your application will be rejected, and your money refunded.

    Payment and confirmation

At the end of your application, you'll be able to make a secure payment for your e-Visa service fee. The cost is 99 euros for a 30-day visa, and 129 euros for a 90-day visa. Your payment will initiate the processing of your application, and a confirmation email will be sent to the address you provided on the form.

    What happens next?

The maximum time that applicants can expect to wait for results is 3 business days. However, many applicants receive their results in 24 hours or less. All final decisions, both in terms of processing time and approval, depend on the government of Ethiopia.

Once your application is approved, your Ethiopia tourist eVisa will be sent as a PDF document to the email address you provided on your application. Print out your eVisa and have it with you when you enter Ethiopia. Authorities will want to see it, along with your valid passport.

  • eVisa validity period

An eVisa to Ethiopia can be obtained for a single entry only.

For many countries, the eVisa validity period starts from the date the eVisa is issued. However, Ethiopia has chosen a different method: The validity period of your Ethiopia eVisa starts from the date of entry you listed on your application form. In other words:

    • If you have a 30-day eVisa, then it will remain valid for 30 days following the date of entry you gave on your application form
    • If you have a 90-day eVisa, then it will remain valid for 90 days following the date of entry you gave on your application form

For example, if you list "June 8" on your application form as your intended date of entry, then your Ethiopia eVisa will be valid starting on June 8. If you have a 30-day eVisa, you can legally remain in Ethiopia during the 30 days following June 8; if you have a 90-day eVisa, you can legally remain in Ethiopia during the 90 days following June 8. If you enter the country after June 8, you will still have to leave Ethiopia again within 30 (or 90) days after June 8.

Regardless of whether you carry a 30-day or 90-day visa, all Ethiopian e-Visas have the following traits in common:

    • All Ethiopia e-Visas are tourist visas
    • Every electronic Ethiopia visa is a single entry visa

Please note - your eVisa will be digitally linked to your passport number. That means if you lose your passport, or it needs to be replaced for any other reason, your Ethiopia eVisa will be rendered invalid. You will need to obtain a new eVisa for travel to Ethiopia in order to enter the country.

    Re-entry and extension information

The Ethiopia tourist eVisa is single entry only, which means that you cannot exit Ethiopia and re-enter on the same visa.

If you need to enter Ethiopia more than once, the most practical (and least expensive) approach is to leave the country and re-apply for a new eVisa through our online application.

It is possible to extend your original visa in Ethiopia through the government if you have a good reason. However, it involves government visits and high fees (double, triple, or quadruple the original fee, depending on how many renewals you have applied for.)

Extension times are also quite short compared to validity times for new visas. For these reasons, visa extension should be used only as a last resort.

It is far more practical to plan ahead for your travel authorization, and to re-enter the country using a completely new Ethiopia eVisa from Evisa Express

ATTENTION To be able to apply for an eVisa to Ethiopia- your passport has to be valid for a minimum period of 6 months.

  • Transit visa information

If you are simply planning to transit through Ethiopia - in other words, to pass through the country on your way somewhere else - then you do not need an eVisa as long as the following conditions are met:

    • You do not plan to leave the transit zone at the airport
    • Your connecting flight is within 24 hours

If you do intend to leave the transit zone, or if your connecting flight is not within 24 hours, then you must apply for a transit visa at the airport. The transit visa is not an online visa, and you cannot apply for this visa online. You must contact authorities from the Ethiopian Airlines Transit services within your airport of travel in order to obtain one. We recommend that you do this far in advance in order to be sure of the proper procedures and documentation requirements.

  • Requirements on arrival

Upon arrival in Ethiopia, you will need to show the 2 following documents to customs authorities:

    1. Your valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months past your intended date of entry)
    2. Your printed Ethiopia eVisa. You will have received your approved eVisa at the email address you provided on your application; print out the PDF and carry it with you.

Required documents

To apply for an Ethiopian e-tourist visa, you will need to supply your trip data and passport information. You must also upload 2 documents to the online application:

  • A recent photograph of yourself that meets passport photo standards
  • A scan or digital photo of the bio-data page of your passport

Important - your passport must be valid for 6 months past your intended date of arrival. Otherwise your application will not be accepted.

Important information

  • All applicants must apply for their Ethiopia tourist visa at least 3 business days in advance of their visit
  • Each traveler must file a separate eVisa application
  • Bearers of an Ethiopian eVisa must present a hard copy of their evisa, as well as their valid passport, upon entry into Ethiopia
  • Transiters who do not plan on leaving the transit area of the airport, and whose connecting flight is due within 24 hours, are not obliged to obtain an Ethiopia evisa
  • The Ethiopia eVisa is only issued for purposes of tourism. Absolutely no business or labor activities are permitted with an e-Visa
  • The validity of an Ethiopia eVisa starts on the intended date of entry you give on your application - not from date of issue or actual date of entry
  • It is possible to request an extension of your electronic tourist visa before the visa expires by visiting The Head Office of The Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Do not overstay your visa - there are serious fines and legal penalties

It is possible for citizens from selected nations to get an Ethiopian visa on arrival. However, both the government of Ethiopia and Evisa Express recommend completing online applications for eVisas in advance of travel. Carrying a pre-obtained visa also relieves pressure on airport officials facing high traffic volumes, and prevents you from having to wait in long lines.

  • What if my Ethiopia E-visa is denied?

If your Ethiopia e-Visa is denied, you must work with the Ethiopian travel authorities to resolve the issue.
