eVisa to Tanzania: Basic Information

The e-Visa was officially started in November 2018 by the Immigration Commission of Tanzania. Consequently, travelers can apply for an online visa without visiting the embassy in person. All formalities related to obtaining an electronic visa do not require leaving your home - you can complete an e-visa application online on our website.

The electronic visa authorizes a one-time entry to Tanzania for no more than 30 days. The cost of e-Visa is 99 Euro.

US citizens are required to apply for a multiple-entry visa and it will cost 149 Euro.

  • Types of eVisa

    There are two types of electronic visa to Tanzania:

    Tourist eVisa – it is issued for tourist purposes such as holidays, visiting friends or relatives, etc.

    Transit eVisa – it enables transit through Tanzania to another destination. The maximum stay allowed in Tanzania is 7 days. This e-visa is valid for transit purposes only. It cannot be used for tourist purposes.

    Please be advised that only holders of regular or temporary passports issued by countries eligible for the electronic travel authorization program can apply for an e-visa.

    If your country of citizenship is not listed, it is necessary to apply for a standard embassy visa in order to visit Tanzania.

  • eVisa to Tanzania Application Form

    The formalities required to travel to Tanzania are to have a valid passport (at least 6 months from the planned departure date ) and an electronic visa that will allow a legal stay in Tanzania.

    You will only need to complete the form electronically available on our website. To complete the application for both tourists and transit purposes you will be required to provide basic information such as e-mail address, passport data, home address, employment information and details of the planned stay, date of entry to the country, length of stay, type of port of arrival and data regarding accommodation in Tanzania.
    Besides, each application must include a photo, a copy of the passport (scan or photo) and a copy of the return ticket or a copy of the ticket for onward travel in the event of transit through Tanzania.

    After making a payment for the application using one of the available payment methods, you will receive a confirmation of submission of the application along with detailed information on the entire visa process by email.

    Application processing usually takes up to 10 business days, but it can be extended occasionally. It all depends on the Immigration Office in Tanzania. The result of the visa application will be sent to the e-mail address provided in the application. After receiving the electronic visa, you only need to print the document and carry it with you when traveling to Tanzania. Upon arrival in Tanzania, you will be asked to show a valid passport and printed visa.

    To complete the online application, please use the panel on the left. Choose the type of travel: tourist or transit - and enter your citizenship (confirmed in your passport). Click "Apply online" and fill out the form.

  • eVisa Validity Period

    Tourist eVisa - it is a single entry visa that allows a stay up to 30 days. This means that you must use an e-visa within 30 days of entering the country. The e-visa is valid for 30 days from the planned date of entry to Tanzania given in the application. So make sure that the data is correct - if you change it on arrival too, you would have to apply again.

    Note for US citizens: US citizens can only apply for a multiple-entry visa that is valid for one year from the date of arrival in Tanzania (not from the date of issue of the document) and it allows a 90-day stay in the country. This type of visa is only available to US citizens.

    Transit eVisa – the e-visa is valid for 7 days from the intended date of arrival in Tanzania. It only allows transit through Tanzania to a particular destination. Tourist stays on this visa are not possible.

  • eVisa Transit Information

    If you have a passport issued by an eligible country, you will need an electronic visa for transit travel through Tanzania. The transit visa allows you to stay in Tanzania for up to 7 days only for transit purposes. For transit travel, just select this type of visa from the panel on the left. The processing time for the application is a maximum of 10 business days.

    Citizens of countries that do not qualify for an electronic visa have to contact the embassy for more information on regular visas.

  • Requirements on Arrival

    You are required to have a valid passport and printed visa to travel to Tanzania. The printout of the document may be black and white. It will be shown to the customs officials on arrival. Moreover, you will receive an additional passport stamp with information as to when to leave the country.

  • Types of entries

    Electronic visas are only accepted at the following ports:
    Airports:
    Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA)
    Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
    Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA)
    Mwanza International Airport (MWZ)

    Border crossing points:
    Namanga border
    Tunduma border

    Note: You are also entitled to enter the country through a seaport.

Important information

  • The applicant's passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the planned date of entry into the territory of Tanzania
  • The visa expiry date does not start when the document is issued, but with the date of entry into Tanzania specified in the application
  • The electronic visa is issued only for tourist or transit purposes. For a business trip or work in Tanzania, you are required to visit the embassy to get a regular visa
  • The e-visa is automatically assigned to the passport, therefore in the event of a change or expiry of the travel document, you have to re-apply for travel authorization
  • Everyone with a passport is obligated to submit a visa application to be able to travel to Tanzania
  • You cannot extend your authorized stay in Tanzania
