Visa Australia: Basic Information

Foreign citizens need an appropriate visa (ETA or eVisitor) when traveling to Australia for tourism or business purposes.

All visitors must obtain a valid visa in advance in order to enter Australia. The Australian visa application must be submitted online, and it costs 49 EUR.

There are a few different types of visas you can travel with. The most popular are ETA (electronic travel authority) and eVisitor. Both of them allow you to travel for tourist and business purposes for a maximum period of 3 months, and they are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. The difference between them is that eVisitor is intended for citizens of European countries, while ETA is intended for the following countries: Brunei - Darussalam, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United States, and Malaysia.

  • Types of visa to Australia

    The visa eVisitor and ETA may be issued for two purposes:

    Tourism  -  is used for tourism purposes (a holiday, visiting friends and relatives, etc.) Valid for 365 days, starting on date of approval. Good for multiple visits of up to 90 consecutive days each.

    Business - is used for business purposes (taking part in a conference, negotiating a business contract, etc.) Valid for 365 days, starting on date of approval. Good for multiple visits of up to 90 consecutive days each.

    If your country of citizenship is not listed, it is necessary to apply for a standard embassy visa in order to visit Australia.

    - Click “apply online” and fill out your application. You will need your passport details and a valid email address to complete this form.

    Please make sure that you have entered all of your passport details correctly. You will not be asked to submit a copy of the passport itself.

    Once your application is completed, you will receive confirmation of the submission of the application. Usually, the whole process takes a maximum of 3 days, but very often approval occurs on the same day. It is worthwhile to remember that the entire visa process and the processing time is at the discretion of the Australian Immigration Service.

    You will receive an approved e-visa by email. It will be automatically assigned to your passport number, so there is no need to print the document or show it at your point of entry. All you need to do is to carry the valid passport that you used when filling out the application.

  • Validity period

    The visa to Australia is a multiple entry visa and is valid for 1 year (12 months) from the date of approval.

    You can travel to Australia for a maximum of 3 months at a time, which means you can stay up to 3 months each time you enter Australia. Your stay cannot be extended from within the country. If you wish to return, you must leave Australia for a minimum of 3 days. After that, you are allowed to return to Australia for another 3 months (if those 3 months fall within your e-visa’s validity period).

    Remember that if your passport is valid for less than a year, your  visa will only stay valid until your passport expires. In the event of any changes or the expiry of the passport, a new application must be submitted.

    A visa of Australia is also required for transit through the country. If you are a passport holder from one of the countries that are visa eligible, you can apply online. If your nationality is not eligible for an visa (eVisitor or ETA), you are obliged to go to an embassy to get a traditional visa.

  • Requirements for Australian visa on Arrival

    All you need in order to enter Australia is an approved e-visa and a valid passport issued by an e-visa eligible country. The e-visa number is automatically and electronically assigned to the passport number, so you do not need to have your visa printed. Nevertheless, you are required to carry a valid passport (with your visa assigned) and be able to show it at the airport.

    eVisitor is also a digital document that entitles travelers to travel to Australia, but it can be issued only for EU Citizens.

    Yes and no. You can of course apply for a visa to Australia twice if you are going on two separate trips, leaving Australia between trips. 
    However, the requirements of the Australian government state that all applicants for an Australian visa must be outside of Australia at the time of application. That means that if you are already in Australia, you cannot extend your trip by applying for a second Australia visa. You must leave the country first.

    Additionally, it is not recommended to submit multiple Australia visa applications simultaneously during the visa process. If you have already submitted an application with Evisa Express, wait until the result of the application (approved or denied) before trying again. Submitting to the visa system a second time while you already have an active application can make the visa process take longer. 

  • Who is eligible for an Australian electronic visa?

    Anyone from an eligible country, who carries a valid passport, is eligible for the Australia visa.

  • My passport is expiring soon, can I still get an Australia visa?

    If your passport is about to expire, it is highly recommended that you renew it before applying for your visa. Australia does not permit travelers with expired passports to remain in the country. No matter the date on the visa you are issued, your legal stay automatically ends the moment your passport expires. You could face penalties if you overstay your visa due to an expired passport.

  • Do children or infants need a visa to Australia?

    Yes! All travelers to Australia, regardless of age, are required to have an Australia e-Visa. Australia will deny entry to anyone without the correct document, including infants and children.

  • How will I receive a visa for Australia?

If this happens to you, work with the Immigration authorities to resolve the issue. Remember, however, that this situation is extremely unlikely - the vast majority of travelers enter Australia using their ETAs with no issues whatsoever.
