On average, Italian citizens can expect the approval of their ESTA application within 24 hours of submitting an online form. However, as the standard processing time is 3 business days, it is necessary for the application to be filled out and submitted early enough (at least 72 business hours in advance of the planned departure to the US). 

Important note: It is at the total discretion of the US Government when your application is processed. That is why the handling time can differ and be elongated if the US authorities find it necessary.
