Cambodia Entry and Travel Requirements

Cambodia Entry Requirements defines all the rules that must be met by every traveler in order to access Cambodia without any issues. These requirements include the necessary documents that one needs to obtain before the intended travel, as well as some additional restrictions implemented due to the ongoing pandemic.

Among the most important documents that every foreign national must have to travel to Cambodia are a valid passport and a valid visa for Cambodia. The Cambodia visa policy determines what types of visas are required for particular nationalities depending on their travel purpose and planned length of stay in the country. Only a few nationalities can visit Cambodia visa-free for short-term stays, including citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Philippines, and Vietnam.

Moreover, Cambodia allows citizens of around 220 different countries to obtain an electronic visa for Cambodia for tourism purposes. Holders of the Cambodian eVisa may spend up to 30 days in the country. Nationals of a few countries not eligible for an electronic visa may obtain a visa on arrival.

Travelers from some countries must apply for an embassy visa much in advance of their planned trip, regardless of the purpose of their visit. Among these countries are Christmas Island, French Guiana, Cocos Islands, Sint Maarten, and French Polynesia. Moreover, all travelers planning a longer stay than 30 days in Cambodia are also required to apply for a visa at the nearest Cambodian Embassy. Visiting Cambodia does not require having an essential travel purpose.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Cambodian authorities introduced a set of regulations for arriving travelers. Currently, vaccinated travelers are exempt from pre-departure Covid-19 testing requirements and on-arrival testing. Unvaccinated travelers may travel to Cambodia but are still required to a 7-day quarantine.

Please note that the coronavirus situation is constantly evolving, and the covid-related entry requirements may change at short notice. Do remember to check the latest travel advice before going to Cambodia.

Who can enter Cambodia?

Cambodia remains open to international tourists allowing entry both for unvaccinated and vaccinated travelers. All must hold approved Cambodian visas and meet other entry requirements. Depending on the vaccination status, these requirements may slightly differ.

In March 2022, Cambodia lifted the pre-departure and on-arrival testing requirement for fully vaccinated travelers.

Moreover, do remember not to overstay your Cambodian visa. Otherwise, you may be fined, detained, or deported.

Before leaving Cambodia, do not forget to check the entry restrictions applicable for the country of your next travel destination.

Traveling to Cambodia

Cambodia remains open for international travelers who must meet certain entry requirements. Both fully vaccinated and non-vaccinated arrivals can enter Cambodia for non-essential purposes, e.g., leisure and tourism-related activities.

Most travelers planning a trip to Cambodia must obtain a visa prior to the planned travel. The country restored the visa exemption and issuance of electronic visas and visa on arrival service.

Fully vaccinated tourists now can enter Cambodia with valid vaccination proof. Unvaccinated travelers still must follow testing and quarantine requirements. The insurance requirements were lifted. Nevertheless, all travelers are still highly recommended to obtain the one with a Covid-19 coverage of a minimum of USD 50,000.

Since the covid-related requirements are constantly changing, all travelers should follow all the travel updates before going to Cambodia.

Every child traveling to Cambodia may also need a valid visa. Parents or legal guardians are the persons responsible for the visa applications of their underage travel companions.

Passengers who will be transiting through Cambodia on their way to another travel destination and will be staying in a hotel when awaiting the connecting flight the next day must meet the entry requirements applicable to their vaccination status. They should also remember to check the entry requirements for the country of their next or final destination. For example, they may need to take a pre-departure test to board the connecting flight.

In most cases, obtaining a tranist visa is mandatory to transit through Cambodia, except for passengers who will be leaving Phnom Penh International Airport on the same aircraft they arrived in Cambodia. Any other Cambodian entry point requires a transit visa.

Holders of Cambodia eVisa are also entitled to tranist through the country.

Cambodia visa requirements

Cambodia eVisa

In 2006, Cambodia introduced the electronic visa system allowing citizens of certain countries to apply for a tourist visa for Cambodia entirely online. Cambodia eVisa functions as a single-entry visa, and its holder may stay in the country for up to 30 days, while the visa remains valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

In March 2020, the Cambodian government suspended the issuance of electronic visas due to the coronavirus situation in the country and worldwide. The issuance of tourist visas for Cambodia was restored in October 2021.

Visa on Arrival

Visitors from a few countries are not eligible for Cambodia eVisa but may obtain a visa on arrival in Cambodia. The VoA is issued only at some entry points, including Phnom Penh and Siem Reap International Airport and some land border crossing points. The visa on arrival is granted for maximally 30 days and may be extended. Additionally, all countries listed among eligible for an electronic visa are automatically eligible for a VoA too.

Regular Visa

Nationals of certain countries must apply for a regular Cambodia visa at the nearest Cambodian Embassy prior to their planned trip, no matter their travel reasons. Embassy visas are issued for 30 days and can be prolonged for another 30 days for a fee.

Below, there is the list of countries whose nationals must get an embassy visa to Cambodia for all travel purposes:

  • Cocos Islands
  • Christmas Islands
  • French Guinea
  • Sint Maarten
  • French Polynesia

Visa-exemption

Nationals of only a few countries can travel to Cambodia without a visa for maximally 30 days. However, their visit must be tourism or leisure-related. Staying in Cambodia for longer requires submitting an application for a relevant visa.

All members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are allowed to visit Cambodia visa-exempt, including the following countries:

  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Laos
  • Singapore
  • Philippines
  • Vietnam

Travelers from visa-exempt countries must still apply for a visa for Cambodia if their stay exceeds 30 days.

Travel Insurance

Cambodia has lifted the requirement for travelers to have insurance covering Covid-19 treatment, but having an insurance policy is still highly recommended. While treatment is readily available in Cambodia, the cost of medical care can be significant.

The proper insurance will protect you in case of any medical emergencies, and it will also provide financial assistance if you need to cancel your trip due to illness, political unrest, etc. Before you travel, be sure to research the risks and purchase a comprehensive insurance policy.
