Malaysian Reopening Plans and Vaccinated Corridor with Singapore

Malaysia starts to revive its coronavirus-stricken economy. The country announced plans to welcome international visitors by January 2022, while the new vaccinated corridor between Singapore and Malaysia will start operating on 29th November 2021.

Malaysia, an island country in Southeast Asia, has recently made a decision to start to revive its economy after the prolonging coronavirus-caused lockdown. During the recent weeks, the COVID-19 infection cases in the country have been notably reduced. The vaccination program in Malaysia  is also on the right track with over three-quarters of the entire Malaysian population (32 million) being vaccinated.

The economic recovery program was moving forward too slowly without reopening the borders to foreign visitors. According to the recent announcements, Malaysia plans to welcome international travelers from the beginning of the upcoming year to boost the tourism industry. 

Coronavirus-related protective measures, including COVID-19 tests, will definitely remain in force. Other restrictions will be revealed over time according to the changing coronavirus situation.

Next week, on 29th November, Malaysia will open a vaccinated travel lane with Singapore. A similar travel lane was also agreed to be opened soon with Indonesia.

Singapore-Malaysia Vaccinated Travel Lane details

Travelers departing from Singapore will be able to travel under VTL between Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur Int. Airport. Traveling will be possible with one of the following six airlines, each operating one flight daily:

  • Scoot
  • Jetstar Asia
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Malindo Air
  • AirAsia
  • Malaysia Airlines

Requirements to enter Malaysia from Singapore

All travelers to Malaysia departing from Singapore must meet the following requirements:

  • stay in Singapore or/and Malaysia for the last 2 weeks in a row 
  • receive the full dose of COVID-19 vaccine (approved by KKM)
  • book one of the available VTL flight
  • register and pay for a RT-PCR test to be taken upon arrival
  • take a RT-PCR test 2 days of departure flight
  • download and register MySejahtera

Short-term visitors: obtain a visa (if applicable), book a return flight, buy insurance travel insurance with a minimum of RM 100,000 coverage for coronavirus-related medical treatment potential costs. 

To check-in, travelers need to provide:

  • a valid travel document
  • a valid vaccination proof (electronic or physical)
  • a negative result of COVID-19 RT-PCR test
  • registered profile at MySejahtera app

Upon arrival, they will need to:

  • take a RT-PCR test and wait at the designated airport area until receiving the test results (1-3 hours)
  • show travel document, boarding pass, valid visa, and return ticket during immigration control

During a stay in Malaysia:

  • follow COVID-19 protocol and the implemented public health measures
  • keep activated MySejahtera app

e-Visa to Malaysia

Citizens of eight countries (China, India, Montenegro, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) can apply for an electronic visa to Malaysia. They will simply need a valid passport to submit an online application. 

e-Visa enables a 30-day stay in Malaysia and remains valid for 3 months. Its holder can use it to explore Malaysian tourist attractions, spend time with family or friends residing in this Southeast Asian country, or use it for any other  tourism-related activity!
