Indonesia to Temporary Suspend Visa-Free Travel for 159 Countries

Indonesia has announced a temporary suspension of visa-free travel for nationals of 159 countries. This decision was aimed at addressing concerns about the transmission of diseases.

According to the statement made by the Minister of Law and Human Rights of Indonesia, the visa-free travel policy for 159 countries has been temporarily suspended. 

The said countries, together with 10 ASEAN nations, could previously enjoy visa-free entry to Indonesia under Presidential Regulation No. 21, made in 2016. 

The decision to stop visa-free visits was due to the increasing concerns caused by the public order disruptions and the potential danger of disease transmission from travelers coming from countries acknowledged by the WHO as non-disease-free

ASEAN countries can still travel to Indonesia visa-free

The new visa policy regulations do not affect ASEAN countries that can still visit Indonesia without a visa and stay there for up to 30 days, only holding a valid passport and a return ticket. 

The complete list of ASEAN nations includes:

  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Singapore
  • The Philippines
  • Thailand
  • Timor Leste
  • Vietnam

To prolong their stay in Indonesia, nationals of the abovelisted countries can apply for different types of visas, including e-VOA, Limited Stay Visa, or Visit Visa. 

Electronic visas for Indonesia

The Indonesia visa can now be obtained online for the purposes of tourism, business, and transit. 

The e-Visa for Indonesia enables a 60-day stay in the country and must be used within 3 months (90 days) from the issue date. 

Moreover, the visa can be extended by additional 30 days. The extension, however, must be handled before the current visa expires.

To obtain an Indonesian online visa, a traveler just needs to fill out a short online form, upload necessary documents, including their face photo and bio-data passport page copy, and cover the processing fee.

The approved e-Visa will be delivered to the applicant's email address as soon as approved.
