East Africa Tourist Visa: Basic Information

In recent years, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have teamed up to create the East Africa Tourist Visa, an electronic travel document that allows you to visit all three countries. This is great news for tourists due to the fact that this region has some of the very best tourism opportunities the world has to offer.

The e-Visa is available for travelers from every country. As long as you have a valid passport, you are welcome to apply. The application process can be done online without the need to visit an Embassy or undergo visa interviews. Even your payment can be made online, using a debit/credit card or other secure method. The East Africa Visa costs 149 euros per traveller.

  • Types of Visa's

    There is only one type of East Africa Visa. It allows travel through and between Kenya, Rwanda. and Uganda for the purposes of tourism. This e-Visa has the following parameters:

    • The East Africa Visa allows travel in Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya
    • Initial entry must take place through Uganda or Rwanda
    • The e-Visa is to be used for tourismonly in Rwanda and Kenya. This includes family visits. The visa can be used in Uganda for tourism and business activities (signing a contract, attending a conference, etc.)
    • The visa is a multiple entry visa
    • The visa is valid for 90 days from the planned date of entry
  • List of eligible countries

    Whereas some countries can be quite selective about which nations participate in their program for e-Visas, the East Africa Tourist Visa is available to citizens of every nationality in the world.

    The only requirement is that you are able to show a valid passport and a few other supporting documents (for complete details, see "East African Visa - application form" and "Required documents", below.)

    Please be aware that your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months past your intended date of entry. Any application that shows passport validity of less than six months will be denied, and the processing fee refunded.

  • East African Visa - application form

    You are obliged to apply with at least 3 days advance.

    Please carefully read and comply with the important notices and guidelines stated in each step of the application form.

    Fill in the application with details about yourself and your trip, including your planned date of entry. Follow all of the instructions you find on the form. You'll be asked to upload some supporting documents, including a digital copy of the bio-data page of your passport. Travelers who plan to enter through Uganda must provide additional documentation.     At the end of your application, pay the processing fee using a debit/credit card or other secure payment method. The travel visa cost is 149 euros.

    After you click "Submit," a confirmation email will be sent to the address you provided on your form. This email will contain your personalized application number. If you need to contact customer service for any reason, have that number ready so that we may serve you more efficiently.

    The typical processing time for travel visas is 3 business days, but most applicants get approval sooner. Please be aware that the ultimate decisions about visa process times and approval rest with the governments of Rwanda and Uganda.

    Your approved e-Visa shall be sent to your email in PDF format, and shall remain valid for 90 days past the date of entry that you gave on your application. Print out your visa and have it ready to be inspected by Ugandan or Rwandan authorities upon entry.

  • Visa validity period

    East African Visa will enable your stay in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for:

    Your East Africa Visa is valid for 90 days, starting on the planned date of entry. The EATV authorizes multiple entries. In other words, during your visa's validity period, you may enter and exit Uganda and Rwanda as often as you need to, and travel freely throughout Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya.

    Please note that the validity period for e-Visas begins on your planned date of entry (the date you give on your application) and not on the date of issue.

    Important! Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned date of arrival in order for your application to get approval.

    Important! Your passport must maintain the same number for the entire duration of the visa validity period. In other words, if your passport is lost, stolen, or replaced for any reason, your visa will no longer be valid.

  • Transit visa information

    Travelers transiting through Uganda, Rwanda, or Kenya on their way somewhere else do not need visas if they do not plan on leaving the airport's designated transit zone.

    All travellers who plan to leave the transit zone must have transit visas. This visa type must be obtained at the airport; it is not available online. For more information, please contact your airline, as well as the Customs Department at your airport of destination.

  • Requirements on arrival

    All travelers are required to carry the following documents when entering Rwanda or Uganda:*

    Approved e-Visa in physical form (for example, this may be obtained by printing with a home printer) Valid passport. Must be valid for 6 months past the intended date of entry that you listed on your application form


    *The East Africa Tourist Visa permits travel through Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. However, entry is only permitted through Rwanda and Uganda.

    Both documents will be inspected by customs officials upon your arrival.

  • A vaccination certificate against yellow fever
  • A document describing your itinerary
  • A copy of your return ticket

Important information

  • Each applicant is required to apply at least 3 business days in advance of travel
  • Travelers who already hold a valid travel authorization for Uganda, Rwanda, or Kenya are not eligible for the East Africa eVisa
  • You must present a physical copy of your eVisa at your point of entry to Rwanda or Uganda
  • Travelers are not permitted use Kenya as their first point of entry
  • The East Africa Visa does not authorize participation in labor activity. In Rwanda and Kenya, only tourism is permitted (including family visits); in Uganda, tourism and business activities are permitted, but this does not include being hired by a Ugandan company or starting your own
  • East Africa Visas shall not be extended. If you wish to prolong your stay, you must exit the region and reapply for a new travel document

    East Africa Visas are available on arrival. However, it is far more efficient and secure to arrive in Rwanda or Uganda with a visa already in hand. Not only does applying for your visa in advance eliminate the risk of wasted airfare should you be unable to get a visa on arrival; it also relieves pressure on airport staff and customs officers. You'll also spend less time waiting in line.

  • What if my East African e-Visa is denied?

    It is extremely rare that a pre-approved eVisa is denied at the border.     Yes, you can and must apply for an East African e-Visa for your child if you are not a citizen of Uganda, Kenya, or Rwanda. Fortunately, processing travel visas is exactly the same for children as for adults, so you can apply through Evisa Express the same way you would for yourself.

  • Can I extend East African e-Visa?

    Unfortunately, an East Africa e-Visa cannot be extended. If you would like to stay longer in Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda, you must apply for a new visa.
