In today’s world, international visa systems are constantly evolving. Since the early 2000’s, many international travelers are no longer required to apply for a standard Embassy visa (also known as a stamped visa or sticker visa) in order to travel. Many citizens of eligible countries may instead travel with a pre-approved electronic document called an eVisa.

However, not all countries have eVisa agreements with each other – and even when they do, not all citizens can take advantage of them. Can Indian citizens get an eVisa to Turkey? The answer is a bit complicated: Although most Indian travelers to Turkey must apply for a traditional visa, some Indian citizens are eligible for a Turkish eVisa.

But which Indian citizens can get an eVisa? And what are the parameters for eVisa application and use? In this article, we’ll tell you Turkey’s exact visa requirements for Indian citizens, and how Evisa Express can help eligible Indians to get an eVisa to Turkey.

1. What are eVisas?

eVisas are pre-approved, government-issued, digital travel documents that grant admission into a select group of countries. Turkey is one of those countries, and so is India. eVisas are different from traditional Embassy visas in two different ways:

First, the application process for an eVisa is less expensive, quicker, and easier than applying for a traditional Embassy visa. Whereas an Embassy visa application requires travel to the Embassy or Consulate for interviews and the submission of paperwork, you can apply for an eVisa anywhere with internet access, including your own home.

Second, eVisas are often designed especially for travelers taking short trips (in the case of Turkey, 30 days or less). Most eVisa holders are tourists on vacation or visiting family, or business travelers aiming to sign contracts or participate in training. Longer-term activities such as education or employment still require a traditional Embassy visa.

And of course, citizens who are not eligible for an eVisa because of certain rules must still apply for a traditional visa. Only Indian citizens who meet certain extra criteria are eligible for an eVisa at this time. In our next section, we’ll discuss who is and is not eligible for an eVisa to Turkey.

2. Which Indian citizens can travel to Turkey with an eVisa, and which must apply for a traditional visa?

Turkey’s agreement with India does not currently include all Indian citizens. Turkey provides what is called a Conditional eVisa, with permissions only for Indian citizens who meet specific criteria. Indian citizens are eligible if they:

  • Hold a valid residence permit to a Schengen country, the USA, the UK, or Ireland,
  • OR hold a valid Embassy visa to a Schengen country, the USA, the UK, or Ireland. Must be a traditional Embassy visa – electronic visas are not accepted!
  • OR be a diplomatic passport holder

In addition, travelers must:

  • Be able to provide proof of hotel reservations in Turkey
  • Be able to provide proof of sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay ($50 USD/day)
  • Have a valid passport with a validity exceeding the expiration date of the eVisa to Turkey

All other Indian citizens must apply for a traditional Embassy visa in order to travel to Turkey.

3. I’m not eligible for an eVisa to Turkey! What should I do next?

If you are not eligible for an eVisa to Turkey, you must apply for a traditional Embassy visa in order to travel there. You will follow standard procedures for paperwork submission, payment, and interviewing.

Travelers take note! Currently, not all Indian citizens may be eligible for an eVisa to Turkey – but there are many other countries who do provide eVisa eligibility to all Indian citizens. Evisa Express offers eVisa applications for Indian citizens traveling to Vietnam, Kenya, Bahrain, and more. Check out our website for more information.
